Also known simply as a roughing gouge. Recommended for the initial turning of uneven or square spindle stock to round. The shape of the spindle roughing gouge enables the tool to cut safely with the wings (the tips of the side walls) well back from the work piece. Not designed for use on bowl grain projects. Made from high speed steel and then properly hardened and tempered. It will keep a sharpened edge about six times longer than carbon steel and resist "blued" softening from overheating during grinding or from heavy turning. It comes with a hard White Ash handle and brass ferrule. NEVER use a spindle roughing gouge to turn bowls!
